Images captured in hand, memories recorded with heart
With a smartphone at hand the world comes to our eyes, distance redefined by accessible photographing. Every picture we take chronicles a story, past or present, heightens its touching moments and builds a common memory. Thus to photograph is not only to document, but also to capture a delicate, fleeting universe of five senses. Sweet or sour, happy or sad, a variety of feelings comes and goes; may the merry ones stay with the images. Each to their own ways of experiencing the world: to observe, to forge a prospect, and to learn to express oneself by various means.
Photography is an intimate language between the world and us, whereas a phone is our passport of eye-travelling.
William Shum, professional architect, non-professional photographer. Based in Hong Kong, William Shum spent his childhood in the street, observing the human drama around. In hope of sharing the idiosyncrasy of the worldly beauty with a larger audience, this hobby in recent years turned into a career of “phonetography“—teaching photography with cell phones, through which he has made friends and spreaded positive messages.
In 2016, William set up William Shum Phonetography and since then has hosted numerous courses, tours and exhibitions, amassing thousands of enthusiasts. His works have been regularly shortlisted in both local and international photography contests and are prize-winning in Prix de la Photographie Paris (PX3), Tokyo International Foto Awards (TIFA), and National Geographic Hong Kong Photo Contest 2020, to name a few.
Living on a quiet island with his wife, he now devotes his time to pursuing the meaning of life.
