Stanley is a waterfront that tells stories with the sea breeze, European charm blends with the scents of a working fishing harbour, and the land quietly reflects East and West living side by side. In 1841, Stanley was briefly an administrative centre; after the ravages of war, it reinvented itself as today’s leisure and tourism destination. From the origins of its place name to war memorials and the reshaping of heritage sites, Stanley’s layered identity has long been forming in everyday life.
The Stanley Dragon Boat is where this diversity continues and comes together. In the 1960s, residents held ceremonial races for blessings in front of the Tin Hau Temple. In 1975, it pioneered an International/Foreign Teams category and a Women’s category, making competition a shared language across differences. Founded in 2001, the Stanley Dragon Boat Association has since drawn hundreds of teams and set world records at the Dragon Boat Festival. Today, it continues to welcome teams and spectators from home and abroad—uniting traditional rituals, sporting spirit, and a joyful atmosphere in a citywide celebration.
This isn’t only a book about an intense race schedule. What we value most is the shared experience: rowing in unison, and drawing closer through the same drumbeat. Open this book to discover how dragon boating turns tradition into living energy—and how inclusion and togetherness become real strength.
