Tony Blackwell, a distinguished world class professional photographer in Australia.

Blackwell's journey with Hong Kong began in the 1980s, landing at the now-closed Kai Tak Airport. His experiences during those formative years have shaped his connection to the city, evolving from brief stopovers to deep explorations of its cultural essence. In his latest work, he draws inspiration from iconic photographer Fan Ho,  aiming to capture the unique character of modern Hong Kong through glimpses into the timelessness of its fishing villages which still retain some of the charm reminiscent of the mid-20th century, contrasting these with the edginess and vitality of its contemporary night life, all resonating with the essence of Ho’s work.

Throughout his travels, Blackwell has developed a keen eye for the intimate narratives that unfold in the street, in this case within the vibrant bar scenes and back alleys of Hong Kong. His photographs invite viewers into these spaces, encouraging them to ponder the stories behind the captured moments. Each frame is a blend of stark contrasts—intimacy and exposure, neglect and life—creating a compelling narrative that resonates with his audience.

Moreover, Blackwell's collaboration with local photographer Michael Kistler enriched his perspective, allowing him to discover new angles and opportunities within the bustling city. This synergy is evident in the neon-lit night scenes in the book, showcasing Blackwell's ability to adapt and innovate in response to his environment.

In a world increasingly obsessed with instant gratification, Blackwell’s book serves as a reminder of the enduring value of print and the stories it can tell. His work is not merely a collection of photographs; it is a heartfelt exploration of a city that has profoundly impacted him.

Tony Blackwell's book promises to be a visual celebration that captures the essence of Hong Kong, inviting readers to immerse themselves in its stories, beauty, and colors. It is a celebration of both the city and the artistry of photography, brought to life through the lens of a masterful storyteller.
