Between 2019 and 2021, the world was cloaked in the shadow of a pandemic, and it felt as though people were living in perpetual darkness.
During this period, a heavy shadow weighed on both the minds and bodies of individuals. Mentally, the future seemed swallowed by gloom, with an overwhelming sense of uncertainty. Physically, faces were masked, making each breath a struggle.
Yet, despite the grim circumstances, life’s breath endured. Beneath the masks, emotions of every kind quietly but vividly persisted.
2019至2021年間，世界正在疫情的陰霾之下，人們彷彿生活在暗影中。
當時人們無論是精神上或肉體上，都被一道陰影籠罩著。精神上覺得前路彷彿被黑暗吞噬，四周一片漆黑。肉體上是被口罩覆蓋，難以呼吸。
但無論當時環境如何惡劣，人們那份氣息仍然活躍，在口罩下散發著各種情感。
幽閉之息這本書記錄了當時陰影中的氣息，那份五味雜陳、有溫度和充滿生命力的情感。
縱然那份氣息被幽閉著，仍然能感受到那份充滿人情味的熱度，希望能夠走出那份陰霾，能在沒有阻隔的空間下，盡情呼吸。
Breath Within Shadows seeks to capture the spirit of that time—the breath within the darkness—a tapestry of raw emotions, warmth, and human resilience.
Though stifled and confined, this breath carried with it a glimmer of hope: the dream of stepping out of the shadows and breathing freely once again, unencumbered.
Alan Kwok is FUJIFILM X-photographer and motion graphic designer.
Supported by Hong Kong Arts Development Council, Alan’s second exhibition was held in Pao Galleries, Hong Kong Arts Centre in 2021. His goal was to visually document and explore the emotions of people who are facing a daunting and unpredictable future.
Invited by FUJIFILM Taiwan, Alan’s first exhibition was held in Taipei, Taiwan in 2019. The focus of the project was to showcase a side of Hong Kong to Taiwan that is unseen by the public.
